Cotton production in Turkey in MY 2019-20 was 3.45 million 480 lb bales, which dropped by 16.23 per cent to reach 2.89 million 480 lb bales in the following year (MY 2020-21) due to COVID-19. It is expected to recover in MY 2021-22 to reach 3.40 million 480 lb bales, increasing by 17.65 per cent over the previous season, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.

Turkish cotton imports went from 4.67 million 480 lb bales in MY 2019-20 to 5.05 million 480 lb bales in MY 2020-21, rising by 8.14 per cent. Imports are expected to drop by 4.55 per cent in MY 2021-22 to 4.82 million 480 lb bales over the previous year.

The government of Turkey has said that the irrigation provided by State Hydraulic Works (SHW) will be more limited as compared to that in MY 2020-21, majorly in the Aegean region due to budget constraints. Thus, farmers need to be cautious and regulate their usage of water.

The demand of cotton from the US usually picks up during the second half of the marketing year but it may alter as COVID-19 pandemic comes under control. It may also be affected by the commercial and political environment.
