  • Turkish exports via railways rose by nearly 13 per cent between January and July, and its expanding rail freight capacity would contribute to further boosting export volumes, transport and infrastructure minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said.
  • “Our goal is to expand these networks and further strengthen Turkiye's strategic role in Europe's trade routes," he said.
Turkiye’s exports using railways rose by nearly 13 per cent between January and July this year to 1.2 million tonnes of cargo, according to transport and infrastructure minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, who recently said the country’s expanding railway transportation capacity would contribute to further boosting export volumes.

"We have also renewed conventional lines that had been untouched for almost 100 years. We have connected our organised industrial zones, factories and ports to our railway network," Uraloglu was quoted as saying by domestic media reports.

"Our goal is to expand these networks and further strengthen Türkiye's strategic role in Europe's trade routes," he said.

Istanbul and surrounding provinces play a significant role in railway transportation, he said, noting that 86 per cent of total exports, or the equivalent of more than 1.03 million tonnes, were transported from Istanbul and neighboring provinces.

Rail connections to Europe offer substantial economic and environmental benefits as well, he said. At least eight freight trains operating daily between Turkiye and Europe.

The country’s top export items include automotive parts, textile products, chemical products, cement and construction materials.
