According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, shipments during the first five months of the current year decreased by 44.44 per cent, from exports of $36.893 million in the corresponding period of the previous year. The share also reduced from 0.50 per cent to 0.33 per cent in this period. Turkiye’s total apparel exports were $7.330 billion from January to May 2023 and $6.725 billion from January to May 2024.
Egypt’s share in Turkiye’s apparel exports began to fall after COVID-related disruptions. The share was 0.75 per cent in 2019 when Turkiye exported apparel worth $120.895 million to Egypt, out of its total apparel exports of $16.063 billion. The share eased to 0.74 per cent in 2020 when the shipment to Egypt amounted to $110.661 million. Turkiye’s total apparel exports amounted to $14.959 billion in the same period.
During the pandemic, disruptions persisted into 2021, although restrictions and lockdowns were gradually eased. Consequently, Turkiye’s total apparel exports rebounded to $17.351 billion, with shipments to Egypt amounting to $139.551 million, representing 0.80 per cent of the total. Egypt’s share increased in tandem with the rise in export value, according to TexPro.
However, Turkiye’s exports to Egypt reduced to $119.973 million in 2022 despite the fact that Turkiye’s total apparel exports further gained to $17.921 billion. Hence, Egypt’s share reduced to 0.67 per cent of the total. The share further decreased to 0.41 per cent in 2023 when Turkiye exported apparel worth $68.867 million to Egypt, while Turkiye’s total apparel exports were $16.815 billion in the same period.
