Ugandan prez seeks UMA advice for ways to revive textile industry

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has sought the advice of the Uganda Manufacturers Association to forge ways to revive and protect the domestic textile industry and reduce imports.

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently sought the advice of the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) to forge ways to revive and protect the domestic textile industry and reduce imports.

Kaguta met UMA representatives recently.

Uganda imposes taxes on textile imports to encourage local manufacturing.

Only a tenth of Uganda’s cotton undergoes value addition now, a figure UMA aims to significantly raise. If the country value adds to the remaining 90 per cent cotton, the industry would transform the country, said UMA chairman Deo Kayemba.

UMA’ is committed to advancing Uganda’s economic goals, including the ambitious target of expanding the economy from $55 billion to $500 billion.

“UMA aims to significantly boost local production, create jobs, and enhance Uganda’s global competitiveness in the textile market,” he was quoted as saying by domestic media reports.
