UK’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has initiated a transition review of a countervailing measure on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) imported from India, as of yesterday. This review aims to assess the suitability of the existing measure, which the UK inherited from the EU, for the UK's current needs. The current duties on PET imports from India range from 0 per cent to 13.8 per cent.

PET, a type of plastic widely used in the production of textiles such as clothing fabrics, saw total imports worth over £200 (approximately $257 million) in 2023.

The period of investigation for this transition review spans from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, while the injury period for the case covers from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2023, TRA said in a press release.

Businesses that might be affected by this investigation are encouraged to register their interest through the TRA’s online case platform, the Trade Remedies Service, by July 25, 2024. This registration is crucial for the TRA to gather all relevant data from UK industry, which will inform any potential changes to the existing measure, TRA said in a press release.
