Braskem is excited to announce the first sale of chemically recycled polypropylene (PP). Under its circular eco-system brand Wenew, Braskem is now supplying Georg Utz AG, a leading manufacturer of reusable transport packaging in Switzerland. With this collaboration, Wenew introduces to the market its circular, ISCC+ mass balance certified, chemically recycled polypropylene (PP) based on post-consumer plastic waste. Braskem's circular PP will be used by Utz Group to create their circular food contact approved packaging for transport.
The new material packaging solution underscores the partners' dedication to supporting a circular economy by incorporating advanced recycled content into food transport packaging. This joint effort supports brand owners by providing the market with high-quality, functional, and circular products made from mixed plastic waste, thereby advancing their journey toward a more sustainable future.
OUR COLLABORATION
"At George Utz AG, we are committed to pioneering sustainable solutions in reusable transport packaging. Our collaboration with Braskem, utilizing their circular chemically recycled polypropylene (PP), marks a significant step forward. This partnership not only aligns with our mission to enhance the circular economy but also enables us to offer brand owners advanced, eco-friendly packaging options for food transport. Together, we are setting new standards in sustainability and innovation." - Carsten Diekmann, general manager of George Utz AG.
"We are thrilled about this first closed-loop project with Georg Utz AG," said Alexander Van Veen, commercial director polyolefins & recycled products Europe & managing director Braskem Netherlands BV. "This collaboration demonstrates the power of joint efforts in the value chain to create solutions that not only meet the highest standards for food transport packaging but also significantly reduce plastic waste. It is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and the circular economy."
CHEMICAL RECYCLING SUPPORTS TO ACCELERATE CIRCULAR SOLUTIONS
Wenew represents and consolidates Braskem's efforts in the circular economy, contributing to Braskem's sustainability goals aiming to reduce plastic waste and further the company's growth strategy. Chemical recycling is a complementary process to traditional mechanical recycling, converting hard-to-recycle plastic waste back into its original building blocks using chemical processes. Wenew offer is made from pyrolysis oil, a product of one type of chemical recycling called pyrolysis. In this process, plastic waste is heated in the absence of oxygen, causing it to break down into a liquid called pyrolysis oil. This oil can then be refined and used as a raw material to produce new plastics or even fuel.
