The US experienced a modest increase in both distributive trade sales and manufacturers' shipments for February 2024, according to the latest data from the US Census Bureau. The combined value, adjusted for seasonal and trading day differences but not for price changes, was estimated at $1,866.5 billion. This marks a 1.6 per cent increase from January 2024 and a 1.0 per cent increase from February 2023.Manufacturers and trade inventories were estimated at an end-of-month level of $2,567.5 billion, reflecting a 0.4 per cent rise from January 2024 and a 1.0 per cent increase compared to February 2023. These figures are also adjusted for seasonal and trading day differences but not for price changes.
The total business inventories to sales ratio, which provides an indication of the balance between supply and demand, stood at 1.38 at the end of February, based on seasonally adjusted data. This is a slight increase from the February 2023 ratio of 1.37, as per the bureau.
In February 2024, the US saw distributive trade sales and manufacturers' shipments rise to $1,866.5 billion, a 1.6 per cent increase from January and 1 per cent from the previous year, as per the US Census Bureau.
Inventories also grew to $2,567.5 billion, up 0.4 per cent from January.
The business inventories-to-sales ratio edged up to 1.38.
