Insights

  • In May 2024, the Netherlands' export volume fell 4.3 per cent YoY, with notable declines in natural gas exports.
  • Imports dropped 1.7 per cent.
  • CBS's July Exports Radar shows worsening export conditions since April, with larger YoY declines in German industrial production and more negative outlooks from Dutch manufacturers on foreign orders.

In May 2024, the total volume of goods exported from the Netherlands, adjusted for the number of working days, fell by 4.3 per cent year-on-year (YoY), according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This decline was particularly notable in the export volumes of natural gas. Meanwhile, the volume of goods imported decreased by 1.7 per cent compared to May 2023.

The CBS Exports Radar for July indicates that the conditions for exports have become more unfavourable since April. The YoY contraction in German industrial production was larger and that Dutch manufacturers held more negative opinions about their foreign orders.
