China, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan recently signed a joint venture agreement to build an intermodal cargo terminal in Alyat village at the Port of Baku.

The agreement was signed by Taleh Ziyadov, chief executive officer (CEO) of Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC; Nurlan Sauranbayev, chairman of the Kazakhstan Railways JSC; and Yuan Xiaojun, CEO of Xi'an Free Trade Port Construction and Operation Co Ltd, on the sidelines of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku.

The new terminal will include a multi-purpose cargo yard, a 5,000-square-meter indoor warehouse complex and a container yard with a capacity of over 1,000 containers, media outlets from Central Asia reported.

The Port of Baku, a key component of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor (TITR), covers 400 hectares and is located 70 kilometers from Baku. It has 13 berths capable of accommodating Ro-Ro vessels, ferries and general cargo operations.

Augmenting infrastructure at the Port of Baku is expected to raise cargo throughput and speed up delivery times along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor, a key link between Europe and Asia, connecting China and Central Asia to Europe via Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
