India’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) recently approved eight projects of the railways ministry with a total estimated cost of ₹24,657 crore (~$2.94 billion).

The projects cover 14 districts in seven states—Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana and West Bengal, and will expand the existing railway network by 900 kms.

These will reduce logistics costs and improve logistics efficiency by connecting unconnected areas and enhancing transportation networks, resulting in streamlined supply chains and accelerated economic growth.

The projects are a result of PM-GATI Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, a release from the ministry said.

Sixty four new stations will be constructed, providing enhanced connectivity to 510 villages in six aspirational districts, i.e, East Singhbum in Jharkhand; Bhadradri Kothagudem in Telangana; and Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Rayagada in Odisha.

The capacity augmentation will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 143 million tonnes per annum.
