A recent inter-ministerial meeting in New Delhi decided to nurture an ecosystem to help Indian companies manufacture containers to assist traders in the export-import (EXIM) sector. The target is to be self-sufficient in the requirement of containers.  With a cluster base manufacturing in focus, the Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) will work with the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways (MoPSW) on the issue.

Minister of ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal; minister of railways, communications and electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and minister of health and family welfare and chemicals and fertiliser Mansukh Mandaviya participated in the meeting.

The meeting also discussed domestic bulk cargo transportation using inland waterways using containers. This may reduce logistics costs and handling charges, an official press release said.

Earlier, a committee was formed comprising bureaucrats of several ministries and representatives from CONCOR and the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited to assess the demand of containers in domestic trade, EXIM trade as well as the problem faced in the domestic manufacturing of containers.

In the domestic segment, CONCOR requires nearly 50,000 containers in the next three years.
