Marks & Spencer (M&S) recently announced its decision to close its Hardwick distribution centre on Hardwick Grange and giving DHL the authority to run its new South East distribution centre at Welham Green in Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. The decisions are part of a five-year transformation programme to make M&S a faster, more commercial retailer.
The changes include creating a single-tier clothing and home logistics network to move products from suppliers to stores faster and at lower cost. This will be achieved by moving to a smaller network of large distribution centres, strategically placed across the nation, according to a company press release.Marks & Spencer (M&S) recently announced its decision to close its Hardwick distribution centre on Hardwick Grange and giving DHL the authority to run its new South East distribution centre at Welham Green in Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. The distribution centre in Bradford has been automated and it can now handle more capacity. The one at Hardwick will cease operations in September and work will transfer to other sites across the M&S network.
Its South East distribution centre, scheduled to open in 2019, is currently being mechanised and fitted to M&S specifications. DHL will operate the site, provide transport operations and recruit around 500 workers to work there. (DS)
